When families face financial instability and crises like illness, accidents, or job loss, their housing and overall security are quickly at risk. Without immediate financial help, meeting rent becomes a major challenge, possibly leading to eviction and home loss. It's more cost-effective to help them keep their current home than to cover the significant expenses of relocation. Losing a home goes beyond financial strain; it causes emotional trauma, affecting the education and mental well-being of adults and children.
Once a family becomes homeless, finding new housing becomes very difficult. An eviction record makes it hard to rent in the future, and debts from legal and lease-breaking fees add to the struggle. Homelessness not only disrupts job stability but also the family's overall income. Taking proactive measures to prevent home loss is crucial, ensuring the safety of families and providing a stable living environment for children. This preventive approach is essential as it minimizes the widespread consequences that occur when families experience the turmoil of homelessness.
With more than 40% of Americans a $400 expense away from financial distress, the threat of crisis looms closely for too many families. Preventing families from spiralling into homelessness is an essential part of the Family Promise mission. This grant based prevention program is designed to help keep people from becoming homeless. This program provides assistance with rent arrearages up to three months.
